Identify the bicycle wheel size
Start with the tire sidewall. Look for an ISO/ETRTO marking such as 47-559 or 40-622. The second number is the bead-seat diameter in millimeters and identifies the rim diameter more reliably than labels such as 26-inch, 27.5-inch, 28-inch or 700C.
Also record tire width, rim width, valve type and available frame or fork clearance. A replacement motor wheel must accept an appropriate tire and place the braking surface or disc rotor where the bicycle brake can reach it.

How to measure dropout spacing
- Remove the battery from an existing electric system and secure the bicycle.
- Remove the wheel using the bicycle manufacturer’s instructions.
- Inspect and clean the dropout faces without filing or reshaping them.
- Use a suitable caliper to measure between the inside faces where the hub seats.
- Record the spacing, slot shape, material, thickness, axle retention method and nearby clearances.
- Compare the measurements with the exact motor or wheel engineering drawing.
Do not force a hub into a narrower space or spread a frame or fork unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that procedure.
Front and rear dropouts differ
Front dropouts are part of the fork and must manage steering, braking and motor axle loads. Fork material, slot orientation, lawyer tabs, suspension design and brake mount can all affect suitability. A front-hub installation requires explicit attention to axle retention and torque reaction.
Rear dropouts sit around the drivetrain. Rear spacing must accommodate the motor body plus cassette or freewheel, spacers and frame clearances. Derailleur alignment, chainline and disc-rotor position need to remain workable.
Axle dimensions and hub-motor fit
Compare axle diameter, flat-to-flat dimension, threaded length, shoulder position, cable exit and washer arrangement. A slot that appears close in size may still prevent full axle seating or leave too little thread engagement.
Through-axles and solid slotted axles are different systems. Many hub motors use solid axles with flats and do not fit a through-axle frame without a specifically engineered solution.
Torque-arm considerations
Motor torque tries to rotate the axle in the dropout. A correctly selected torque arm can transfer that load to a larger structural area. Verify axle fit, arm orientation, anchor point, fasteners and installation sequence from the torque-arm manufacturer.
More motor torque, regenerative braking or softer dropout material may change requirements, but there is no universal rule that one specific torque arm fits every bicycle. Do not use a torque arm to justify a damaged or prohibited installation.
Disc-brake and rim-brake clearance
For disc brakes, identify the rotor attachment standard, rotor diameter, caliper position and lateral offset. Compare the motor shell and spoke path with the caliper, and confirm any permitted spacers or adapters.
For rim brakes, the new rim must have a compatible braking track at the correct diameter and width. Pad position, tire clearance and rim suitability all matter. A disc-only rim will not provide a rim-brake surface.

- Measuring outside the dropouts instead of between the inside hub-seat faces
- Ignoring axle flats, shoulders, cable exit and washer stack
