What the controller and display do
The controller regulates power between the battery and motor. It interprets input from the pedal-assist sensor, throttle, brake cutoffs, and display while enforcing programmed current, voltage, and temperature limits.
The display provides supported ride information and sends commands or settings to the controller. Its menus do not create features the controller lacks, and the controller may reject a display that speaks a different digital language.
Start with voltage and current ratings
Confirm the controller's allowed battery-voltage range, low-voltage cutoff, maximum battery current, and phase-current limits against the battery and motor documentation. Do not assume that a nominal-voltage label describes every operating limit.

Match the motor to the controller
Verify brushed or brushless operation, sensored or sensorless support, phase-wire arrangement, hall-sensor requirements, rated voltage, and any learning-wire procedure. Mid-drive systems may use proprietary controllers rather than general-purpose hub-motor controllers.
Even where phase and hall connectors appear familiar, pin assignments can differ. Use a wiring diagram for the exact models instead of trial-and-error connections.
Match the display and communication protocol
The controller and display must use the same communication protocol, firmware expectations, connector pinout, and supported settings. UART, CAN, and manufacturer-specific systems are not interchangeable merely because a plug looks alike.
Confirm exact part numbers or a manufacturer-approved compatibility list. When replacing one item, preserve the original model information before disconnecting it.
Check every input and connector
- Pedal-assist sensor type, supply voltage, signal format, magnet arrangement, and mounting clearance.
- Throttle voltage range, signal type, connector pinout, and whether throttle use is supported or permitted.
- Brake-cutoff switch type, normal state, connector, and controller input behavior.
- Lighting outputs and accessory voltage—never assume they equal battery voltage.
- Water-resistant connector family, keyway orientation, pin count, polarity, and cable length.
Why connector shape is not enough
Two connectors can share the same shell while using different voltages, pin assignments, or data protocols. Forcing, adapting, or probing an undocumented connection can damage the display, controller, sensors, or battery system.
Record connector photos, wire colors, labels, part numbers, and diagrams, but treat wire color only as a clue. The manufacturer's pinout is the deciding reference.

Is a matching waterproof connector enough?
No. The shell, keyway, and pin count do not confirm polarity, voltage, pin function, or digital protocol.
